What MAP Means to Me

10/25/2015

Salutations to all my fellow Mustangs out there!  My name is Luc Plaisance and I’m here to tell you what MAP means to me.

I’d like to start with asking you, “What is college all about?”  Is it about obtaining that hard earned degree?  Is it about discovering your true self in this weird existence we call life, or is it all about cramming for tests and hoping that your favorite Netflix show doesn’t add another new season right before finals?  I think it is all of that, but there is one factor I feel that is of utmost importance.  It’s about being part of a community as we go through life…a community that accepts who you truly are. It’s finding a group that cares and wishes to see you continue to mature and develop.  When you fall, they are there to pick you up, dust you off, and tell you to keep going.  That community for me is Mustang Activities and Programming, also known as MAP.

I am very fortunate to have found these outstanding individuals who I can proudly call friends. MAP members, or MAPpies, are the ones who provide the sweat, dedication, and brain power for many of the largest campus events and traditions. They provide the ideas and support MAP needs.  Without them, this club would not survive; with them, it thrives.  Then, there are the people of the executive board, whose main goal is to lead all of the MAP members.  Last, but not least, there is an individual who has dedicated her entire self to these causes.  This person is our golden compass, always guiding everyone in the right direction.  Her name is Hope Miller Miles and I could not ask for better advisor. Every MAPpie is a small part of something bigger.  As one, we make life at Stevenson bigger and better.

Lastly, we are all unique.  We all have different interests and seek our own path in life. We come from a variety of different backgrounds and will end up in disparate places, but every one of us has their own unique story to contribute.  This is what makes MAP so great.  Our diversity and dedication are our strengths.  We invite struggles and challenges with open arms, for we know that in unity we can make anything possible.  We all share and support each other for one cause at Stevenson and MAP. Our focus is to make our collective college experience better and to provide a memorable four years to every single person at the University.  Considering all this, I have to ask you one final question, what are you waiting for?  Join MAP now!

“Give Me an H!”
“Give Me an O!”
“Give Me a C!”
“Give Me an O!”
Put it all together and what does that spell?!? HOCO !!!

That’s right, it's Homecoming time once again here at Stevenson. I’m super excited for all of the fun activities happening here on campus, Are you? As you should be. This is hands down my favorite time of year because of two main reasons: one, it’s great to see everyone display their school spirit and pride to be a mustang. It shows everyone who visits our campus, that we are proud to represent Stevenson University. We bleed Green and White! And two, all of the homecoming festivities!!

This year homecoming week is jam packed with all sorts of fun stuff to do. On Monday, October 19th there is the Mr. & Mrs. SU Pageant, that will be from 7pm-9pm, located in the Rockland Banquet Room. Mhhhm…this next event is making me hungry for some good ‘ole fashioned breakfast food! Its MAP Midnight Breakfast, which will be held Tuesday, October 20th in Rockland from 10pm-12am. This next event goes perfectly with this…chilly…weather we’ve been having. The annual Chili Cook-Off will be held on Wednesday, October 21st at the Manuzak Center on Greenspring from 11:30am-1pm. On Thursday, October 22nd be ready to support your class quarterbacks at Powder Puff Football. The action begins at 5:30pm and will be located on the Owings Mills Practice Field. Later that night the Bonfire will be taking place. Come ignite the night with us in the Caves Parking Lot at 7-9pm. Show some school pride at Mustang Madness on Friday, October 23rd in the OM Gym from 7-8:30pm. After that, get ready to receive the fright of your life at Haunted Hallways located in Rockland from 8-10pm. Saturday is my favorite day, not only because it’s the weekend, but because the whole day is packed with activities leading up to our funtastic, Haunted Homecoming Party!! The Homecoming football game will be at 1pm, followed by the Crab Feast at 4pm in the OM Gym. Then at 10pm come get your boogie on with us at the Homecoming Party! There will be plenty for you to do. There will be dancing, a DJ, Glow Casino, awesome prizes, Halloween and scary movie Trivia, a costume contest and most importantly, FOOD! Tickets are still available for purchase at the Rock.

As you can see there is a lot going on here at Stevie U this week.
Make sure that you make the most of this Homecoming Weekend and come out to all these wonderful events! Bring your friends, make memories and have fun doing it!

See you Soon!

What Happens When Planning a Large Event?

Happy October Mustangs! Can you believe that we are already on the seventh week of school? It seems that time is just flying by these days. October is packed full of awesome events for you guys! My personal favorite event of the semester is Carnival! This year at our Fall Carnival you can enjoy freshly made funnel cakes, a giant moon bounce, and a petting zoo featuring bunnies, lambs, alpacas, tortoises, mini horses, and more! We also have brought back fan favorites like tie-dye and the two-story rock-wall. On top of that, there will be a DJ and clubs will run fun activities throughout the day!

Let us tell you what the average student doesn’t know about planning a large scale event such as Carnival.

The first thing we do is come up with a budget that fits the needs of this event. Once this budget is established it is our job to find agencies who can meet our budget and give us the most cost effective value. Once these agencies are identified, they will send us a contract that we will review, edit, and send back. Inside these contracts are the agency’s needs. It is our job to sort through their needs and notify the correct department in the university. Often times, we will contact conference services with needs for tables and chairs, Sodexo for any need requiring food or drink, and facilities for any need regarding electricity and water.

Once all of the different departments have been contacted our next step is to organize volunteers that are willing to donate their whole day to help us run a successful event.  Because our Mappies are so self-less this is often the easiest part of our job! Often time we have so many volunteers we have to turn some away! After we have a list of volunteers, we have to begin the advertising campaign!

The advertising campaign involves creating a staircase decoration for the event, putting handbills all over campus, and posting on social media and our website: www.mapatsu.com! Sometimes we have active advertisements where we want you, the students, to participate in an activity or game like guessing songs for Patio Jams or coloring posters for Pinterest Party. Keep an eye out for our Carnival active advertisement this week!

On Friday, I hope you all will be able to join us and see the final step up this fun-filled event!

See you there!
