Mappies Take on NACA

This was my first time at NACA and my first time in Buffalo, so I was really excited for such a new experience. I have been in MAP for less than a year, and needless to say, I didn’t really interact with the people I was going with outside of MAP meetings and events. However, I was looking forward to getting to know everyone on the trip. My favorite part of NACA was watching the acts perform. It was fun seeing such a variety of performers because I wouldn’t have normally watched some of them. I had not seen a lot of comedians or spoken word artists perform live until I saw them perform at NACA.
I tend to get shy when talking to strangers, and NACA really forced me out of my shell to talk to agents and performers. I had my first one-on-one experience with a magician, and I came to the realization that magicians still scare me. I did meet a rapper, LV, who I completely destroyed in an intense match of rock-paper-scissors. He was really friendly and inviting, and we got a few photos too. After spending 4 straight days with e-board members and other mappies, I would say I got to know everyone extremely well. At the conference, I felt proud representing Stevenson University because SU really is home!

I had a great time at NACA. It was a good learning experience. While at NACA there was educational sessions that needed to be attended. Two of the few I went to really stood out to me. I learned some really good things about ways to be more diverse and learned how to get involved in spreading awareness about mental health while still having fun. I also learned how we went about picking events to bring the school.
I was able to get a lot of free stuff as well as get a really cool painting on my leg and meet an amazing spoken word artist. It was great getting to meet these acts and here their stories.
